WA ASET (GATE / Perth Modern) explained
Western Australia uses the Academic Selective Entrance Test (ASET) for entry into Gifted and Talented (GATE) programs and Perth Modern School.
What the ASET covers
The ASET is an ACER-style test with equally-weighted components: reading comprehension, quantitative (mathematical) reasoning, abstract reasoning, and a writing task. No calculator is permitted.
Abstract reasoning
Abstract reasoning uses patterns, sequences and matrices of shapes with no words. It measures logical thinking independent of learned content, so the best preparation is repeated exposure to the question types and the habit of identifying the rule governing a pattern.
Quantitative reasoning and writing
Quantitative reasoning focuses on number patterns, proportion and data interpretation. The writing task is shorter than some states' and rewards clear, well-structured ideas under time pressure.
How to prepare
- Give abstract reasoning dedicated practice — it's unfamiliar to many.
- Rehearse the writing task within its tight time limit.
- Practise quantitative reasoning without a calculator.
- Sit timed full papers close to the test.
Good to know
Exact subjects, timing and dates can change year to year and vary by school — always confirm the current details with the official test administrator before your child sits the exam.
