The VIC selective entry exam explained
Victoria's selective entry high schools use a competitive entrance exam built around the ACER style. Here's what it covers and how to approach preparation.
What the exam covers
The Victorian selective entry exam is a timed, multiple-choice and writing assessment. It typically spans reading comprehension, mathematics, verbal reasoning and quantitative reasoning, plus written expression. No calculator is permitted.
Reading and reasoning
Reading comprehension uses unfamiliar passages and asks inference, main-idea and vocabulary questions. Verbal reasoning tests vocabulary, word relationships and logical deduction, while quantitative reasoning focuses on number patterns, proportion and data — the ability to reason with numbers rather than recall facts.
Mathematics and writing
The mathematics section rewards multi-step problem solving across number, fractions and percentages, measurement and geometry. The writing task assesses ideas, structure, language and conventions against an analytic rubric — clear, well-organised writing scores best.
How to prepare
- Sit a full-length diagnostic to find weak subjects.
- Practise one subject at a time, then mix them.
- Rehearse under timed conditions — pacing matters.
- Review every mistake and re-test weekly.
Good to know
Exact subjects, timing and dates can change year to year and vary by school — always confirm the current details with the official test administrator before your child sits the exam.
