SA IGNITE program (HAST) explained
South Australia's IGNITE programs select students using an ACER HAST-style assessment. It is paper-based and calculator-free.
What the exam covers
The IGNITE HAST typically includes abstract reasoning, mathematical reasoning, and reading comprehension as multiple-choice components, plus written expression. The writing section often involves two shorter tasks (for example a narrative and a persuasive piece).
Reasoning components
Abstract reasoning tests pattern recognition with shapes; mathematical reasoning presents multi-step worded problems; reading comprehension uses unfamiliar passages with inference and vocabulary questions. None rely on memorised facts — they reward clear thinking.
The two writing tasks
Because there are usually two writing pieces in one session, planning quickly is essential. Practise producing a clear, structured response in a short window for both narrative and persuasive forms.
How to prepare
- Practise abstract reasoning patterns regularly.
- Rehearse both writing forms under time pressure.
- Build mental-maths speed for the reasoning section.
- Review mistakes and re-test weekly.
Good to know
Exact subjects, timing and dates can change year to year and vary by school — always confirm the current details with the official test administrator before your child sits the exam.
