Queensland selective schools: HAST and EduTest explained

Queensland is unusual in running two different selective exams. Which one your child sits depends on the school they're applying to.

Brisbane State High — HAST (ACER)

The Higher Ability Selection Test (HAST) is an ACER-style paper covering reading comprehension, mathematical reasoning, abstract reasoning and written expression. It rewards sustained reasoning and clear writing.

Queensland Academies — EduTest

The Queensland Academies (such as QASMT) use an EduTest-style entrance exam, typically covering verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning, reading comprehension, mathematics and written expression. The multiple-choice sections are fast-paced, so speed and accuracy matter.

Which should you prepare for?

Check which exam your target school uses before you start. If your shortlist includes both, prepare broadly across reading, mathematics, and verbal/numerical/abstract reasoning — the underlying skills overlap, so strong general preparation serves both pathways.

How to prepare

  • Confirm the exam and year level with each school.
  • Practise the specific components that exam includes.
  • Sit full-length timed papers to build pacing.
  • Review every mistake and re-test.

Good to know

Exact subjects, timing and dates can change year to year and vary by school — always confirm the current details with the official test administrator before your child sits the exam.
